Possible Alternative Methods of Calculating Point Schedules  On this page we will provide some of the ideas that have been proposed either through private e-mails, discussions, or in our guestbook. We want to stress that these are simply ideas that have been presented and are here for discussion (pros and cons). Several of these ideas are based on the fact that points towards other types of AKC Championships are awarded for other than first place wins. We welcome your input Set a minimum percentage of dogs competing to Finish Establish a minimum percentile to finish. With this method those breeds that currently have more than the minimum finish would be unaffected. Those breeds under the minimum would have their point schedules adjusted to provide for the minimum. This is our preferred method and is central to the Proposal that has been sent to the board of the Golden Retriever Club of America. A copy of that proposal can be found by clicking HERE. Limit Number of Dogs required for a Major Place an upper limit on the number of dogs required for a major. This would leave the point schedules for rarer breeds alone. But make more majors available for the more popular breeds where there are large entries. Points for Reserve Several options have been proposed: Subtract the minimum number of dogs for the points earned by the Winners dog from the total entry. Reserve to get points equivalent to remainder. Points dependent on type of show and number of points Reserve to 4 or 5 point Specialty winner to get 3 point major Reserve to non-specialty majors to get min of 2 points Subtract the number of dogs required for 1 or 2 points and reserve to get points equivalent to the remainder. Points for other/all placements:  Again several options have been suggested:  Increase total points needed to 30 Add Dogs & bitches in competiton for BOW WD/WB get points per existing schedule Reserve gets points lower than WD/WB First place in class to get 1 point if there is competition All placements to get points depended upon number of dogs in competition. All first place class winners to earn points dependant on the number of dogs in competition in that class. Revise existing method of calculating points: Possible tiered system that places a maximum number of dogs in competition for a major, so that there will be more majors available for popular breeds. The AKC currently acknowledges the unique situation of exhibitors in certain geographic areas (Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico) and adjusts the point schedules to provide for more majors.
