How Would Your
Breed Fare?
One of the things that we want to make clear on this
project is that what we
are trying to accomplish is to make things more equitable
for the more
popular breeds. We are not looking to make across the board
changes
in the point schedules. Only to make changes for those
breeds
that are being adversely affected by the current system.
If we look to the title of "Champion" as one of the
indicators of
potential breeding stock we need to ensure that the quest
for the titles
also works towards improving the breed. To do this you need
both
a reasonable number of dogs with the title and a variety of
bloodlines
being represented to provide genetic diversity within the
breed.
One of the downfalls of the current system is that the
competition to
earn the Championship title has become so extreme that
people are
more likely to breed to a particular dog or line in order to
produce
winning offspring. The unfortunate consequence of that is
that
if practiced breed wide it produces genetic bottlenecks and
decreases
the genetic diversity within the breed, while at the same
time
forcing people to essentially specialize in one area of
competition,
which has resulted in large splits between the "working"
and
"conformation" lines.
We have prepared two new charts that show what would
happen to all of the breeds if there were restrictions in
place that
limited the number of Championships to a small
percentage
of the dogs shown. The same type of restrictions that
currently face
the more popular breeds.
Based on other data we've compiled we found the average
ratio of
Championships completed to entries range from a low of just
below 0.5%
in popular breeds like Golden and Labrador Retrievers, to a
high of
2.89% in the Maltese.
These two new charts calculate the number of
championships that
would be awarded in each breed if only specific percentages
of the dogs
in competition for each breed were allowed to earn
Championships.
We've summarized the results in the table below.

Go through the charts and see how many fewer
Championships
your breed would have. Then consider how that would impact
on
breeding decisions.
As we said up above and elsewhere on this site. We are
looking
simply to make things more equitable in the popular
breeds
(roughly the top 15 - 20 breeds based on entries) without
negatively
impacting on the breeds with lower entries.
We believe that if you look at this data and how it
would
impact on your own breed that you will support our
efforts
even if you own a less popular breed.
